Valentine's Day Geocaching at Rankin Trail

On Sunday 14th February we will hold our first Geocaching event at Rankin Trail. Geocaching is a treasure-hunting game. You will receive a list of GPS coordinates of points on the trail and a small toy. At each of these points we have concealed a box containing "treasures". You try to find these boxes. When you find a box you may exchange your toy for one of the treasures in the box. The box will also contain a secret word - collect the words to discover the hidden phrase. Every box contains a notebook and pencil so you can leave a message for the next player. After the hunt we will gather at Red Bay Lodge for a light meal and fellowship. This event costs $12 for adults and $8 for children.

The hunt starts at 2 PM. Dinner starts at 4PM and all participants must be back at the lodge by 5PM. The lodge will close at 6PM.

If you wish to participate you must register by email to bruceskiclub@gmail.com before 10PM Thursday 11th of February 2010.

GPS Information

If you wish to participate but don't have a GPS receiver then let us know in your registration email: we will assign you to a group with a GPS.

You can download a GPX file of Rankin or a KML file of Rankin. We will email a GPX file of cache waypoints to participants on Friday 12th February.

Alkaline batteries lose half of their effectiveness in sub-zero conditions. You can improve the performance of a GPS unit in cold conditions by keeping it inside your parka. You should also bring a fresh set of batteries.
